Wabi-Sabi // Hermitage

A. Ginsberg

St. Paul, father of hermits

The nature of hermitage is not necessarily bound to living in a cave in the mountains far away from civilization. There are other ways to experience life outside the bounds of sick societal impact; one of them being the disregard of modern objects in favor of the wabi-sabi.

It's not even necessary to disregard, really, but to instead recognize. What we put into our body has an effect on how we see the world. We put images in our body every day. We put feel and touch in our bodies every day. We put food in our body every day. There is no difference.

In his book on Wabi-Sabi aesthetic, Leonard Koren finally comes to this thought:

Wabi sabi is the beauty of things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete, the antithesis of our classical Western notion of beauty as something perfect, enduring, and monumental.

We are (and should be) upset by the perfect upset with symmetry and clean lines. Upset by celebrity and botox. Upset by the mechanical recreation of fake life. Upset with chemicals in our breakfast. Upset with the notion of "busy" and "obligation." Upset with the madness, sickness, and death caused by our corporate factory-like country. Upset with not leaving sooner, in our mind. Upset with not leaving sooner, through our actions. After we are upset we can reform our existence to fit our natural existence before we were deluded. Sometimes it takes hermitage; a hermitage we can already find within.
